Francis Perkins

(as told by Elizabeth Perkins Buchheit)

Great Grandma’s husband GEORGE FRANCIS PERKINS had a grandfather named Francis Perkins. Francis Perkins was a captain in the Revolutionary War. The war lasted 4 to 8 years, depending where you lived. The soldiers would come home every once in a while and maybe help plant. They had to get the stuff planted in order to harvest it. But other than that, their wives did everything.

VERNON WORK MYERS: They didn’t have a draft or anything. Someone wrote, “This is not the time for the summer soldier or the sunshine patriot.”

Francis Perkins’ wife took care of all the children and took care of hired help. She couldn’t do much maintenance around the house. Francis wasn’t home more than about four months when he was up on the barn roof. He fell off and was killed. You think you got troubles, think of that poor woman.
