(as told by Elizabeth Perkins Buchheit)
Before O’Hare Airport, there was little old Orchard Place Airport. I used to walk down there sometimes ‘cause I was interested in airplanes and flying and all of those wonderful things. Well one day Amelia Earhart came to Maine Township to give a little talk and my mother had the job of taking her to and from the little airport. Of course Mom was always very personable and knew how to speak to people. She told Amelia Earhart that she just loved flying and would fly anyplace with her and wish she’d taken up flying herself. I did too. And so Amelia Earhart always talked to us very nicely. She was very personable, very nice and a very, very pretty lady, even if she did look like Charles Lindbergh.
VERNON WORK MYERS: My mother said that she would only fly on a plane if Lindbergh was the pilot. She only trusted him.
