(as told by Vernon Work Myers)
My father Clinton Kennedy Myers was a very quiet person. His mother’s name was Rachel Kennedy, which is how he got the Kennedy. My father had a nickname of “Dan”. I called him Poppa. One day during Prohibition, a neighbor said to my mother, “I hear your husband is in jail again.” But it was someone really named Dan Myers that had been put in jail or drinking or bootlegging. It wasn’t my father.
Poppa had a plastering business. He would put up dry wall and do patch jobs. He didn’t have much steady work after about the 1920s, even before The Great Depression hit. Work was getting more and more scarce.
Now this is a funny story — One night my mother heard a fox in the chicken coop so she sent my father out with a shotgun. He fired blindly into the coop and killed three chickens instead! My mother was so angry.
